Simona

Welcome to the International Research Institute for Simulation, Motion and Navigation (SIMONA).

SIMONA is part of the Delft University of Technology and operates an advanced 6-DOF research flight simulator which was designed and built by several groups within the University, in cooperation with partners from government and industry. Read more on the organisation of SIMONA and the simulator it operates.

Distributed simulation exercise successful

28 March 2007

A day before the SIMONA symposium "Fidelity in Motion" is held, co-organizer NLR and the SIMONA Research Simulator cooperated in a distributed simulation exercise. Demonstrating the problems and possible solutions of converging runways operations, a number of NLR simulators were linked to the SRS. Both NARSIM Tower and NARSIM Radar were used to control aircraft landing on runways 06 and 36R of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. With NLR's GRACE simulator making a go-around on runway 06, the SRS also performed a simultaneous go-around on runway 36R. The two simulated aircraft were then successfully separated and a conflict was avoided. In the future the developed distributed simulation environment will be further used for studies where multiple aircraft and ATC simulators of high fidelity are called for.

Flight Dynamics demonstration started

13 February 2007

For the second year running, all 3rd year students following the AE3-302 Flight Dynamics course are given the opportunity to fly in the SIMONA Research Simulator. During an individual 30 minute flight, students are shown basic flight maneuvers and characteristic eigenmotions of the simulated aircraft, the University's Cessna Citation II jet. The demonstration flight is concluded with an approach and landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The simulator's flight path can be followed live in Google Earth through this link.
